Lent Reflection: Squandered

…and there squandered his wealth in wild living.

– Luke 15.13 (again)

A short post today but this amused me.

I was glancing through a commentary on Luke while reflecting on the serious famine which struck the land and noticed the comment on the word ‘squander’.

The word is diaskopzo, and normally means ‘to scatter or disperse’.

When used with property, this takes on the sense of waste or squandering.

However, the throwing motion of the act ‘to scatter’ lends a distinctive sense of movement to the scene.

As such, the picture is of the younger son tossing his possessions into the wind.

Then, I spotted this and it seemed appropriate!

Next time, the famine.
